Lee's  Lyrics
I woke up one morning in March with these verses running around in my head.  I
wrote them down just to get them to leave me alone.

If you want to write a melody for them, drop me a line.
Don't Go to the River

If you're ever in a folk song there's some things you ought to know,
Certain people to avoid and certain places not to go.
There are foods you shouldn't eat, and I'm not talking chicken liver,
But the biggest thing of all, my friend, is don't go to the river.

CHORUS
Don't go to the river, it's the last thing that you'll do,
'Cause you'll either murder someone or someone will murder you.
You'll be beaten, stabbed or strangled, shot or drowned by foe or lover,
And the River Styx will be the only river you'll cross over.

Do you see that lady standing there?  She looks just like your mother,
Or your sister, or your fiancee or late lamented lover.
Though there's something strange about her, still you hasten to be with her
But you dope, you're in a folk song.  Now you're drowning in the river.

CHORUS

There are no good cooks in folk songs, just some interesting meals.
The most popular and tasty all are based on poison eels.
You'd think snakes would be a simpler dish to cook and to deliver.
But, no.  It's always eels and they're from that same damn river.

CHORUS

If there's music in a folk song, it's a music to beware.
All the flutes are made of finger bones, the harps are made of hair.
The singers all are banshees who will set your nerves a-quiver
Cause their sing-alongs are held down at the bottom of the river.

CHORUS

If you're walking by the river, chances are that you can't swim,
And although you're with your fiance, you can't rely on him!
He's conniving with your sister, all his worldly wealth to give her,
And they've hatched a nasty plot involving you, death and the river.

CHORUS

Now, don't get me wrong.   Some folk songs can be beautiful and sweet,
Where true love blooms, there is no want, and food is fit to eat.
But those folks live in village, castle, town or who knows whither,
And they had the common sense to build a bridge across their river!

CHORUS
